According to Deadline, Oscar winner Javier Bardem has officially signed on to join Brad Pitt in Apple Studios’ forthcoming Formula One movie, Apex. The film recently started its production during the Grand Prix race weekends. Further details about his character have not been disclosed yet. This project also reunites Bardem with Pitt after a decade since they both starred in Ridley Scott’s crime thriller The Counselor.
The acclaimed Spanish actor’s most recent project was Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid movie, in which he played King Triton. He will next be seen in Denis Villeneuve’s highly-anticipated Dune: Part Two.
What to Expect in Apex?
Set in a the world of elite motor racing, the film will feature the Oscar winner as a veteran racecar driver who comes out of retirement to become the mentor of a younger driver. Through this opportunity, Pitt’s character will try to return to his former glory by being the newcomer’s partner on the track. Joining Pitt are Snowfall’s Damson Idris as a young F1 racer, The Banshees of Inisherin’s Kerry Condon as the Technical Director, overseeing the design and development of the sophisticated race car, and The Crown’s Tobias Menzies.
Apex is being directed by Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski from a screenplay written by Ehren Kruger. The Formula One film will be produced by Pitt’s production company Plan B along with legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer. This marks Pitt’s latest project with Apple Studios, who have also acquired the rights to the Oscar winner’s upcoming reunion movie with Ocean’s 11 co-star George Clooney, which hails from director Jon Watts.
The Formula One film will be released in theaters, playing exclusively and globally in theaters for at least 30 days before arriving on the Apple TV+ streaming service.
