The Purge creator James DeMonaco wants to bring Lena Headey’s character, among others who starred in the first film, back for a new television series.
Speaking with Collider, DeMonaco was asked about the surviving members of 2013’s The Purge and whether or not there were any plans to incorporate them in future projects related to the franchise.
“Absolutely,” DeMonaco answered. “I always wanted to follow them up. And listen, if the [writers] strike ends and we get a chance, there is talk of doing an interesting take on a TV show where I would be able to do that because we’d be able to explore very intimate Purge stories, but I don’t know if that’s true, but I hope.”
DeMonaco added, “Lena’s character I always thought, way more than James, the Lena Headey character was questioning The Purge in a way that he wasn’t. He was just accepting the financial rewards of selling security systems. Lena always said she wanted to play it like she was dead inside, that the mere fact that The Purge existed had killed her soul.”
The History of the Purge Franchise
Audiences everywhere experienced the Purge for the first time in 2013 with the titular home invasion thriller starring Headey, Ethan Hawke, Max Burkholder, and Adelaide Kane. Operating on a premise where almost all crime is legal for an annual 12-hour period, The Purge ended with Hawke’s character being killed while Headey’s manages to survive the night.
A sequel, The Purge: Anarchy, starring Frank Grillo and Carmen Ejogo followed in 2014. Grillo returned for another outing, The Purge: Election Year, in 2016. The First Purge, a prequel showing how the highly controversial night came to be, arrived in 2018 and was then followed by another sequel, The Forever Purge, in 2021. Additionally, a twenty-episode Purge television show aired on USA Network in 2018.
Along with a potential television show starring Headey, DeMonaco is also working on a sixth Purge film. A release date for the movie has not yet been set.
