Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn took to Twitter to express his gratitude to everyone who supported Marvel Studios’ latest MCU movie during its second weekend, which exceeded expectations by earning an additional domestic gross of $60.5 million. This is only a 47% drop from the first weekend’s domestic gross of $114 million, making it one of the best-performing MCU sequels to date.
Gunn also shared how proud he is that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wasn’t just a “first-weekend cash grab,” showing how much the people have connected well with the story of the titular band of misfits.
Who’s the Cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is once again written and directed by James Gunn. MCU vets Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Sean Gunn, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel return to reprise their respective roles as Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Kraglin, Nebula, Mantis, Rocket, and Groot, while Maria Bakalova joins on as Cosmo the Spacedog. The sequel also features the introduction of franchise newcomers Will Poulter and Chukwudi Iwuji, who portray the roles of Adam Warlock and High Evolutionary.
“In the film, our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days,” reads the synopsis. “Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.”
The space-traveling team was last seen in Marvel Studios’ Disney+ special presentation Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which was filmed simultaneously with the upcoming sequel. In the holiday special, Drax and Mantis try to cheer up Peter by throwing him a Christmas party celebration with the appearance of his childhood idol Kevin Bacon.
