After two decades since its theatrical release, Variety brings word that the long-awaited Freaky Friday 2 has finally entered the early stages of development at Disney.
Per the report, Black List writer Elyse Hollander attached to pen the screenplay. Original stars Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are currently in negotiations to reprise their respective roles as Anna and Tess Coleman in the sequel to 2003’s hit body-swapped comedy film.
Speculations about Freaky Friday 2 started last year when Curtis, who recently won her first Oscar for her supporting performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, started expressing her desire to reunite with Lohan. Earlier this year, Curtis also posted an old photo of her and Lohan on Instagram with the caption, “It’s Friday. I’m just sayin! Freaky fingers crossed!”
What is Freaky Friday About?
Based on Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel of the same name, Freaky Friday was directed by Mark Waters from a screenplay written by Heather Hach and Leslie Down. This version marked Disney’s third adaptation of the classic story. It centered around the bond between a mother and her rebellious daughter. After one of their arguments, they suddenly found themselves in an unbelievable situation when they learned that they’ve unexpectedly switched bodies.
The 2003 film starred Curtis, Lohan, Chad Michael Murray, Harmon, Stephen Tobolowsky, Rosalind Chao, and more. In addition to receiving positive reviews, the film was also a box office success, with a worldwide gross of more than $160 million against a reported budget of $26 million.
