Production on the sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat movie is set to begin later this year. According to a recent insider, The Boys star Karl Urban is in talks to play a major character.
Karl Urban could join Mortal Kombat 2 movie cast as Johnny Cage
In a recent tweet sent out on Thursday, noted insider MyTimeToShine reported that Karl Urban was in talks to play Johnny Cage. Cage is a longtime fan-favorite character in the Mortal Kombat franchise, beloved for his quick wit and cocksure ego. It’s unclear whether or not Urban will appear in the film, so fans will have to wait for a more concrete announcement on casting information for the sequel.
Cage didn’t appear in the 2021 Mortal Kombat film, but was mentioned at the end of the movie. In an ending stinger, Cole Young (Lewis Tan) was tasked with heading to Los Angeles to look for the martial arts movie star. Cage’s face never appeared, but audiences were given a quick glimpse of his iconic belt buckle.
Despite mixed reviews, the Mortal Kombat movie landed at the top spot in the box office and was the most-streamed of HBO Max’s simultaneous release films in 2021.
Not too much is known about the sequel as of now, but it will be directed by Simon McQuoid, who will return to the series after directing the 2021 film as well. It’s unclear just what characters will appear in the film, although rumors have circulated that Shao Kahn, Baraka, Kitana, Quan Chi, and Sindel would appear beside Cage. In April, producer Todd Garner noted that filming for the sequel would run from June to September of 2023.
