As DC hunts for their Superman: Legacy lead, co-CEO of DC Studios James Gunn has revealed what he’s looking for in the next Superman.
Speaking to Variety at the world premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the director was asked about what he wants in the next Superman. Gunn replied that DC is currently looking at a number of people, but in the end, the character has to embody the “humanity” and “kindness and compassion” that the Man of Steel has.
“It’s hard, but we’re looking,” said Gunn of finding the next Superman. “And we actually have some really great choices, which I’m excited about it. But it has to be somebody who has all the humanity that Superman has, but he’s also an alien. It’s gotta be somebody who has the kindness and the compassion that Superman has, and it has to be somebody who you want to give a hug.”
Gunn went on to note that “all the Supermen have been good” and that their job now is to just add to that legacy.
What is Superman: Legacy About?
Currently, not too much is known about Superman: Legacy, with fans still anxious to find out who will play the new version of Superman in the DC Universe. While Gunn has shot down various rumors on social media, most things about the DCU movie are unknown. The director did state that, as of last month, casting hadn’t yet begun.
“Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas,” reads the movie’s official synopsis. “He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
The DC Universe’s first phase, called Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, will feature a multitude of different movies and television shows. A few of the announced projects include Superman: Legacy, a Batman and Robin-focused movie called The Brave and the Bold, a Supergirl movie titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a Swamp Thing film, and multiple TV shows.
