Legendary Entertainment has only just acquired the TV and movie rights to Street Fighter, but it seems like the company is already making headway on a new film. According to a recent report, Danny and Michael Philippou are in final negotiations to direct the Street Fighter movie.
As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, Legendary is in talks with the Australian twins, but not much more was revealed. However, Legendary is reportedly currently having conversations with some possible writers.
Danny and Michael gained notoriety through their YouTube channel RackaRacka that started in 2013 and featured comedic horror videos. Their recent film, Talk to Me, has reviewed well and garnered praise. After winning a bidding war for it, A24 acquired the distribution rights, and it will be premiering in the United States on July 28 after seeing acclaim during Sundance.
Street Fighter has transitioned to other forms of media in the past, most notably the 1994 film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia, and Ming-Na Wen. There were various other animated shows and live-action spin-offs, like the 2009 film Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li and 2014 web series Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist.
However, it has not been as prevalent in the non-interactive space when compared to its genre peer Mortal Kombat in recent years, as the bloodier franchise has gotten three animated movies and a live-action film (which has a sequel in the works) since 2020. Street Fighter has still been active in the game space, though, and is quite close to the release of its sixth numbered entry.
