The recently released Shazam! Fury of the Gods released to some disappointing box office numbers, with the film underperforming even its lower projections. According to star Zachary Levi, however, he doesn’t blame anyone, especially not fans of Zack Snyder.
In a series of tweets this week, Levi replied to a fan who tweeted to the actor about the disappointing box office results and told the actor to not blame Snyder fans. Levi asked why he would do that, and when another fan said that some Snyder fans were happy to see the film fail, Levi acknowledged this as true but pointed to poor marketing as the main culprit for why the film underperformed.
“This is also true. Sad, but true,” said Levi of some Snyder fans being happy the film had performed poorly. “How much that actually affects the box office is anyone’s guess. But I think the biggest issue we’re having is marketing. This is a perfect family movie, and yet a lot of families aren’t aware of that. Which is just a shame.”
Levi did follow up by saying that he’s a fan of Snyder and that while 300 is still his favorite of Snyder’s films, he does say that Man of Steel is probably his favorite DC project that Snyder has done.
Finally, Levi addressed the fans of Snyder’s work one more time, saying that he has no ill will towards the fanbase, but does have an “issue” with “anyone who wishes to destroy something, simply because it’s not what they want.” To him, Levi said, that comes from a place of hate, and not love, which is something he doesn’t like. In the end, though, he did say he loves all fans, including those of Zack Snyder.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is now playing in theaters.
