David Ayer Reveals Cut Suicide Squad Ending for El Diablo

Suicide Squad director David Ayer took to Twitter to reveal a cut ending for one of the movie’s characters — Jay Hernandez’s El Diablo. Responding to a Twitter user that said 2016’s Suicide Squad should have had the teammates help El Diablo build an ofrenda for his family, Ayer revealed that he had had a similar idea.

The director stated that the movie was meant to end with Diablo “making an ofrenda,” which is an altar honoring the dead, “and lighting it with his powers.” However, this was cut out by the studio being in favor of killing the character off. Ayer then said that Diablo’s dialogue is based on the people he grew up with in South Central Los Angeles.

Suicide Squad was directed by David Ayer and released in 2016. Ayer has said that his cut of the movie was very different from what ended up in theaters, while editor David Hickman has said that it was supposed to be a “much darker” film overall.

In 2021, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad was released, serving as a soft reboot and featuring some of the same characters and actors as the 2016 movie.
