Peter Jackson Has Been Kept in the Loop on New Lord of the Rings Movies

Peter Jackson and his writing partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have weighed in on the recent announcement of a new series of movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings books.

Following the statement that a new series of films based on the stories by Tolkien would be developed by Warner Bros. Discovery, fans are wondering whether or not Peter Jackson would be involved in any way. In a statement to Deadline, the trio didn’t confirm or deny anything but said they were looking forward to hearing what Warner Bros. had in mind for films.

“Warner Brothers and Embracer have kept us in the loop every step of the way,” the trio said. “We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward.”

Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens wrote and produced (with Jackson directing) the original The Lord of the Rings trilogy of films, as well as the subsequent sequel trilogy The Hobbit. Their work on The Lord of the Rings trilogy earned them massive praise, with the last entry in the original trilogy, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, winning all 11 Academy Awards it was nominated for, including Best Picture.

Earlier this week, Embracer Group AB, which holds the rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, has made a multi-year deal that will allow Warner Bros. to make new movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved books. The news was revealed during Warner Bros. Discovery’s most recent earnings call and comes after Embracer Group purchased the rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit last year.
