Syfy, Ridley Scott’s Scott Free productions and Warner Horizon Television are teaming to develop a television miniseries based on Arthur C. Clarke’s 3001: The Final Odyssey. Published in 1997, the book offers the fourth and final entry in Clarke’s “Space Odyssey” series and is officially described as follows:
One thousand years after the Jupiter mission to explore the mysterious Monolith had been destroyed, after Dave Bowman was transformed into the Star Child, Frank Poole drifted in space, frozen and forgotten, leaving the supercomputer HAL inoperable. But now Poole has returned to life, awakening in a world far different from the one he left behind–and just as the Monolith may be stirring once again…
Launched with Clarke’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (released in tandem with Stanley Kubrick’s theatrical film), Clarke published a sequel, 2010: The Year We Made Contact in 1982 and a third book, 2061: Odyssey Three, in 1987. Although 2010 was adapted for the screen in 1984, there has never been an adaptation of 2061.
Stuart Beattie (Pirate of the Caribbean) will provide the adapted screenplay and will also executive produce alongside Scott and David W. Zucker. Clayton Krueger will then co-executive produce.
I have always been a fan of Clarkes extraordinary Odyssey series, and certainly Kubricks adaptation of ‘2001,’” says Scott. “I am thrilled to be part of bringing that legacy to audiences and continuing the great cinematic tradition that this story and its creators deserve.”
Arthur C. Clarke is the father of modern science fiction, says Syfy President Dave Howe. We couldnt be more excited to be working with Scott Free and Warner Horizon Television to bring to the screen, for the very first time, the final chapter of this extraordinary masterpiece.
The announcement comes on the heels of Syfy announcing the greenlight of another Arthur C. Classic novel, Childhoods End, which begins production later this year.
