As a screenwriter Alex Garland helped usher in a new era for zombies with 28 Days Later as well as righted some wrongs with his remake of Dredd, and now the Brit is striking out on his own as a director with the sci-fi thriller Ex Machina. In anticipation of the trailer release tomorrow, the film has revealed a first look at a cybernetic Alicia Vikander on the poster, which you can check out below!
The film follows a billionaire inventor who arranges for a young employee to spend a week at his home to test an artificially intelligent female robot that the inventor has constructed.
Star Domhnall Gleeson (Star Wars: Episode VII) teased us with a few comments about Ex Machina during an interview in August, confirming that it was unrelated to the Brian K. Vaughan comic book of the same name.
“I’ve been lucky to read some phenomenal scripts in the past few years. The Alex Garland one ‘Ex Machina’ is absolutely tip-top superb. It’s a three-hander, a psychologically intense thriller. It’s me and Oscar Isaac and Alicia Vikander. It’s beautiful.”
Produced by Scott Rudin and Andrew Macdonald, Ex Machina will be distributed internationally by Universal Pictures, with a UK release date of January 23, 2015. No U.S. release date is set.
