The recently released Halloween Ends takes a bit of a deviation from the typical plot of a Halloween film, something that actor Rohan Campbell said both David Gordon Green and Jamie Lee Curtis warned him about.

For those unaware, Rohan Campbell stars as Corey Cunningham, a new character who essentially acts not only as the main character but also as a killer himself. In the film, through tragic circumstances, Cunningham becomes a pariah after accidentally killing a child he was babysitting. Later in the film, he happens upon Michael Myers and, from there, becomes another boogeyman for the town of Haddonfield.
Speaking to Variety about his role in the film, Campbell said that he knew there might be some backlash to his role in the film from the start, as director David Gordon Green and star Jamie Lee Curtis warned him as much.
“When David offered me the role, he was like, ‘I need you to know that a lot of people are going to really, really, really not be happy with what we’re choosing to do here,'” said Campbell. “‘You’ll probably hear a lot of that.’ Jamie [Lee Curtis] reached out and said the same thing.”
Despite that, Campbell said that some audiences he’s been a part of have gotten the bizarre nature of it right away, while others hadn’t.
“This, to me, feels like the most David Gordon Green movie ever made,” Campbell said. “Stuff is funny, man. When you sit with certain audiences, they either get it right away, or they’re halfway through the movie, and you can audibly hear them being like, ‘What is the tone of this?’ and not giving themselves permission to dive into the humor or bizarreness.”

He also touched on the fact that drafts of the film’s script shed more light on Corey’s home life in the film, which is depicted as difficult due to an overbearing mother.
“You should’ve seen the drafts. Corey is tortured by this woman because of how much she loves him,” Campbell says. “That home life stuff had a deep, deep, deep pool to it that we dove into.”
Halloween Ends is in theaters now and available to stream on Peacock.
