Since the announcement of Greta Gerwig’s involvement with the live-action Barbie film, fans of the acclaimed filmmaker immediately assumed that Gerwig’s acclaimed muse Saoirse Ronan would also be starring in the long-awaited adaptation. However, much to everyone’s disappointment, the four-time Oscar nominee’s Barbie casting never came.

Now, in a recent interview with People, Ronan finally addressed her absence in Gerwig’s upcoming directorial effort, confirming that she was originally intended to make a cameo in the all-star film. However, due to scheduling conflicts with her upcoming drama film The Outrun, she wasn’t able to shoot her cameo when Barbie was filming in London. This would have been Gerwig and Ronan’s third collaboration together since Lady Bird and Little Women.
“I was supposed to do a cameo because I live in London and they were [filming] there,” Ronan shared. “There was a whole character I was going to play — another Barbie. I was gutted I couldn’t do it.”
Despite this, Ronan revealed that she’s still hoping that she could somehow make a small appearance in the film, as its theatrical debut is still a ways off.
“I have texted Margot and Greta and I’m like, ‘If you’re doing any pick-up [shots], maybe I can just walk through the background?'” Ronan said.
The live-action Barbie movie is led by Margot Robbie (I, Tonya, The Suicide Squad), who is also serving as a producer through her LuckyChap banner. The project is being directed by acclaimed filmmaker Greta Gerwig from a screenplay she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach.
Joining Robbie are Ryan Gosling (La La Land) as Ken, America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), Ariana Greenblatt (Love and Monsters), Alexandra Shipp (tick, tick…BOOM!), Emma Mackey (Sex Education), Issa Rae (Insecure), Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Hari Nef (Transparent), and Will Ferrell as the CEO of a toy company.

The film is produced by LuckyChap’s Tom Ackerly and Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner, along with Josey McNamara and Ynon Kreiz. This marks Robbie’s latest collaboration with Warner Bros. Pictures after starring as fan-favorite anti-hero Harley Quinn in 2016’s Suicide Squad, 2020’s Birds of Prey, and 2021’s The Suicide Squad.
