Jason Momoa Calls 2011 Conan The Barbarian ‘A Big Pile of Shit’

Jason Momoa’s career in Hollywood spans a variety of different roles, but one that the actor recently looked back on extremely negatively is the 2011 film Conan the Barbarian.

Speaking to British GQ for a recent interview, Momoa — who will star in the upcoming sequels Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and Fast X — noted that he’s starred in a variety of films that “sucked” in one way or another, but specifically called out the 2011 film based on the iconic character as something that didn’t turn out well from the start.

“I’ve been a part of a lot of things that really sucked, and movies where it’s out of your hands,” Momoa said. “Conan [the Barbarian] was one of them. It’s one of the best experiences I had and it [was] taken over and turned into a big pile of shit.”

While Momoa didn’t go into any specifics on what made the film so bad, it’s not exactly shocking that he felt that way. The film featured a relatively star-studded cast for the time, including Rachel Nichols, Stephen Lang, Rose McGowan, Ron Perlman, Steven O’Donnell, and Morgan Freeman in a voice acting role.

The film, which was directed by Marcus Nispel, was released in the same year that Momoa also debuted on the hit HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones as Khal Drogo, a role that launched him into superstardom. However, the Conan the Barbarian film did not receive the same praise. The movie debuted in mid-2011 and was critically panned, while also failing to perform well at the box office and ultimately not making back its budget in ticket sales.
