Mortal Kombat Movie Sequel Gets Its Director

The sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat movie got its scriptwriter earlier this year, and now the untitled sequel has received its director. According to Deadline, Simon McQuoid is returning to helm the follow-up film based on the fighting game series.

Before Mortal Kombat, McQuoid had previously been known for directing commercials, like Sony’s “Long Live Play” commercial that aired in 2011 during the PlayStation 3 era. He’s also now working with Sony, as he is set to direct the sci-fi film Omega. McQuoid told Variety near the first movie’s release that it was for the fans to decide if there would be a sequel and that there would be a “treasure trove” of lore sitting there for them to dig into. Given how it debuted at the top spot in the box office and was the most-streamed of HBO Max’s simultaneous release films in 2021, it seems as though the fans spoke loudly enough.

Not else is known about the sequel, but it will have Johnny Cage in it, which writer Jeremy Slater confirmed in May. This was heavily implied during the film’s ending that showed part of the character on a poster before cutting to credits. It’s unknown who will play the arrogant action movie star, but WWE star The Miz said he was interested in the role. Joe Taslim, who played Sub-Zero in the film, also said he signed on for four Mortal Kombat movies if Warner Bros. wants to move forward with the series.
