According to Deadline, Squid Game breakout Hoyeon has officially signed on for her first Hollywood feature in the form of A24’s upcoming film adaptation of The Governesses. Hoyeon along with Lily-Rose Depp (The King) and The Worst Person in the World star Renate Reinsve have been tapped for the leading roles in Joe Talbot’s second directorial film, based on Anne Serre’s novel of the same name. Production is expected to take place in Spain.
Hoyeon gained international recognition for her debut acting role as Kang Sae-byeok on Netflix’s hit drama Squid Game, which recently won her a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series. The South Korean modern-turned-actress will also next be seen in Apple TV+’s thriller series Disclaimer starring opposite Cate Blanchett and Sacha Baron Cohen.

The Governesses will be written by Joe Talbot and Olivia Gatwood. This marks Talbot’s second collaboration with A24 after working together on his acclaimed directorial feature debut The Last Black Man in San Francisco, which won the filmmaker the Best Directing award at the Sundance Film Festival.
“The film follows three rebellious governesses who upend the household they work in—inspiriting the minds of the boys in their care, igniting the imaginations of the bohemian couple who employ them and abandoning their charges for erotic adventures,” reads the synopsis.
The adaptation will be produced by Element Pictures’ Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe, Longshot Features’ Rob Richert, and Angus Lamont. It is a production by A24 and BBC Film, who are both financing the project.

Depp’s film credits include Yoga Hosers, The Dancer, Planetarium, A Faithful Man, The King, Voyagers, Silent Night, and Wolf. She will be making her TV debut with HBO’s upcoming series The Idol, which will be led by Grammy winner The Weeknd.
Renate Reinsve is best known for her critically-acclaimed performance as Julie in last year’s Norweigian romantic dark dramedy The Worst Person in the World, which won her the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival. The film was also nominated for two Academy Awards including Best International Feature and Best Original Screenplay.
