According to Deadline, Free Guy director Shawn Levy has signed on to helm the upcoming father-daughter drama film titled Backwards. The rights to the project were successfully won by Netflix following a six-way bidding war.
This marks Levy and the streamer’s latest collaboration after working together on a number of projects such as the Duffer Brothers’ hit series Stranger Things, and the upcoming sci-fi action-adventure comedy film The Adam Project.

Backwards will be based on the short story written by mother-son writing duo Julianna Baggott and Finneas Scott. In addition to directing, Levy will also be producing along with Dan Cohen through their 21 Laps banner.
“In the film, a dying father chooses a method to extend his life that involves reverse aging in a de-aging facility. Appointed to be his caretaker is his estranged daughter,” reads the synopsis. “As the years peel off, they are able to get to the core of where they went wrong as the father relives the memory of different portions of his life, experiences which made him an unlikeable person.”
