Not too much is known about the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but according to director James Gunn, it’s going to be the last time that we see this specific group of Guardians.

Speaking to Deadline during their latest Hero’s Nation episode, Gunn spoke about his highly anticipated third entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film. When asked about the franchise conclusion, Gunn hinted that it would be the “end” for them and that it would be the final time that fans saw this iteration of the Guardians.
“This is the end for us, the last time people will see this team of Guardians,” said Gunn, before he spoke about how the film is coming along and how fans can expect a darker take on the franchise. “It’s big; it’s so, so big and dark, and different from what people might be expecting it to be. I just want to be true to the characters, the story, and give people the wrap-up that they deserve for the story, that’s always a little bit scary; I’m doing my best.”
Whether or not Gunn’s statements mean that the group of Guardians will cease to be in any future films or whether or not the group will just splinter off remains to be seen. Gunn’s comments do seem to echo that of star Dave Bautista, though, who said last year that he believes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be his final time suiting up as Drax.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is once again written and directed by James Gunn. It features the return of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Sean Gunn, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel as they reprise their respective roles as Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Kraglin, Nebula, Mantis, Rocket, and Groot. Joining them are MCU newcomers Will Poulter and Chukwudi Iwuji, with Poulter confirmed to be playing the role of Adam Warlock.

The space-traveling team was last seen in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame where they were joined by Chris Hemsworth’s Thor during the final moments of the film. Because of this, some of the Guardians of the Galaxy stars including Pratt, Bautista, and Gillan are set to appear in Thor: Love and Thunder.
The long-delayed film is currently scheduled to debut on May 5, 2023.
