More than two months ago, Aquaman star Jason Momoa had confirmed that he and See co-star Dave Bautista were indeed developing a buddy cop movie together, which began after the former WWE wrestler first shared this idea on Twitter. Now Deadline brings word that MGM successfully won the rights to Momoa and Bautista’s upcoming action comedy film, beating three other major studios in a bidding war.

Set to be written by Jonathan Tropper (The Adam Project), the untitled buddy cop movie will be led by Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista, who both recently starred in the second season of Apple TV+’s sci-fi drama See and in Warner Bros. Pictures’ Dune film. Momoa and Bautista previously described the project as something similar to the Lethal Weapon films, which would potentially take place in Hawaii. It will be produced by Jeff Fierson.
They are hoping to start shooting for the untitled project in 2023 after they’ve completed filming for their respective superhero sequels. Bautista is currently in production for the long-awaited Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in Atlanta, while Momoa is busy filming for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in London.

Bautista is no stranger to the buddy cop genre as he was previously in action films such as 2019’s Stuber with Kumail Nanjiani and last year’s My Spy with Chloe Coleman. He will next be in several highly-anticipated movies: Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder, where he will reprise his role as Drax the Destroyer and Rian Johnson’s Netflix whodunnit sequel Knives Out 2
Momoa recently starred in Netflix’s action-thriller Sweet Girl and will next be seen in Francis Lawrence’s fantasy comedy-adventure Slumberland.
