The festival is set to finish on October 24 with Eternals releasing just two weeks later on November 5 in theaters across the country. The early premiere at the Rome Film Festival shows just how good Marvel and Disney believe the film can be, with director Chloe Zhao’s last film, Nomadland, earning her the Best Director and Best Picture wins at the 2021 Academy Awards.
While unlikely to pull in major Oscars for Eternals, it’s clear that Marvel believes the film deserves to be among some of the other high-profile films often shown off at film festivals. Based on Jack Kirby’s Marvel comics of the same name, Eternals welcomes an exciting new team of superheroes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The epic story, spanning thousands of years, features a group of immortal heroes forced out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s oldest enemy, The Deviants.
The film will feature a star-studded ensemble including Richard Madden as the all-powerful Ikaris, Gemma Chan as humankind-loving Sersi, Kumail Nanjiani as cosmic-powered Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor Phastos, Salma Hayek as the wise and spiritual leader Ajak, Lia McHugh as the eternally young, old-soul Sprite, Don Lee as the powerful Gilgamesh, Barry Keoghan as aloof loner Druig, Angelina Jolie as the fierce warrior Thena, and Kit Harington as Dane Whitman.
Eternals is directed by Chloe Zhao from a screenplay co-written by Matthew K. Firpo and Ryan Firpo. It is being produced by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. Zhao is coming off from winning numerous awards including Best Picture and Best Director at the recent Golden Globe and Oscar awards for her acclaimed work on 2020’s Nomadland.
