Over the last several months, the Dungeons & Dragons reboot has managed to put together a cast of diverse talent that includes Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith and Regé-Jean Page. Character details have been slim, but at least now we know who’s playing the movie’s villain. Deadline is reporting that Hugh Grant has been cast as the primary antagonist in the film. Additionally, Sophia Lillis has joined the project as well, but the nature of her role remains a mystery.
Grant is coming off a Golden Globe-nominated performance in HBO’s The Undoing. He recently appeared in Netflix’s Death to 2020 special and also had a role in Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen. Lillis, meanwhile, is best known for her role as the young Beverly Marsh in both It films. Last year, she starred in Netflix’s I Am Not Okay With This, which was cancelled after one season. Some of her more recent film work includes Gretel & Hansel and Uncle Frank.

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are directing Dungeons & Dragons and also wrote the latest draft of the script. Paramount is co-producing the movie alongside Hasbro/eOne. At this point, we still don’t know which parts of the D&D mythos will make their way into Goldstein and Daley’s film. However, we do know that eOne’s plans for the franchise stretch well beyond the big screen. Earlier this year, the studio tapped John Wick creator Derek Kolstad to spearhead his own Dungeons & Dragons TV series. Even more TV shows set in the D&D universe are also in development.
Dungeons & Dragons will hit theaters on May 27, 2022.
