Ghost House Pictures and Good Universe know how to hold a Grudge. Deadline reports that Takashi Shimizu’s 2004 supernatural horror film, The Grudge (in turn based on Shimizu’s own Japanese horror franchise Ju-on) is prepping a reboot, attaching Jeff Buhler (Midnight Meat Train) to provide the screenplay.
Sarah Michelle Gellar starred in the 2004 American version as an exchange student who moves to Tokyo and finds herself tormented by spirits of the dead. Gellar returned for a 2006 sequel, but not for the third film, which went direct to home video. The Japanese franchise, meanwhile, currently stands at six separate feature entries with a seventh, Ju-on: The Beginning of the End, slated to be released this year.
The new take on The Grudge will be produced by Doug Davison, Joe Drake, Taka Ichise, Roy Lee, Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert with Nathan Kahane executive producing.
