The new film is said to be set in the present-day and will “re-imagine what we consider nerdy in 2020,” with plans for the project to be a reboot instead of a direct remake of Jeff Kanew’s 1984 comedy.
The Revenge of the Nerds reboot is in the works at 20th Century Studios. MacFarlane will produce alongside Erica Huggins through his Fuzzy Door Productions company. The Lucas Brothers are co-writing the script with Emmy nominee Alex Reubens (Key and Peele, Keanu, Rick and Morty).

The original movie, starring Robert Carradine, Anthony Edwards, Ted McGinley, Timothy Busfield, and Bernie Casey, earned $40.8 million at the box office after premiering in July 1984. The controversial comedy follows a group of bullied outcasts and misfits at Adams College who resolve to fight back against the ongoing harassment by a fraternity of jocks and was followed-up by the 1987 sequel Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise.
