It’s been nearly two years since word first broke that James Wan (Insidious) and Jason Blum were reteaming for the doll horror pic M3GAN and now things are starting to progress for the film as Allison Williams (Get Out) is also reuniting with the indie powerhouse studio to star in and executive produce the film, according to Deadline.

Written by Akela Cooper (Malignant, The Nun 2) on a story from Wan and directed by Gerard Johnstone (Housebound), the story centers on Gemma (Williams), a brilliant roboticist at a toy company who uses artificial intelligence to develop the titular life-like doll that’s programmed to be the greatest companion and a parent’s great ally, but when she gains the custody of her orphaned niece, she utilizes the help of a prototype that has deadly consequences.
Blum is set to produce via his eponymous production company alongside Wan for his Atomic Monster banner, with the latter’s Michael Clear executive producing alongside Blumhouse’s Ryan Turek and Judson Scott overseeing the project for Atomic Monster.
After scoring rave reviews for years on the Emmy and Golden Globe nominated HBO dramedy Girls, Williams made her feature film debut as Rose Armitage in the Blumhouse produced and Jordan Peele written-directed Oscar nominated horror-thriller Get Out, earning her further critical acclaim. The 32-year-old star was last seen in the film world in Richard Shepard’s Netflix psychological thriller The Perfection alongside Dear White People star Logan Browning, which received generally positive reviews from critics.

Blum and Wan previously worked together on the Insidious franchise, the first two of which Wan directed and the later two which he produced alongside Blum.
This isn’t the first time that Wan has been involved with creepy doll movies, in fact they’re a staple of his career (as pictured above). He followed up the 2004 hit Saw (which itself featured a creepy doll) with Dead Silence, a Hammer Horror throwback all about haunted ventriloquist dummies. Wan also directed the two films in The Conjuring series, the first of which heavily featured the doll “Annabelle” which has gone on to be featured in two spin-off movies.
