The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Paramount and Hasbro have tapped screenwriters Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol) to pen a script for a new GI Joe movie which they’re describing as “an ensemble piece.”
THR notes that one character from the pantheon of GI Joe that will appear in the film is “Chuckles,” one of the characters from the original action figure line and Marvel Comics series. They note the character (pictured above) is “known for his undercover and infiltration work.” Birth Movies Death has further details on the character’s esteemed history.
This marks the second project currently in the works with the property as Paramount has a solo Snake Eyes movie in the works as well. The spinoff will be directed by Robert Schwentke (RED, R.I.P.D.) from a screenplay by Evan Spiliotopoulous (Bright 2, The Huntsman: Winter’s War) and tells the origin story of the fan-favorite ninja commando. Ray Park will not reprise his role for the film which arrives October 16, 2020.
The live-action G.I. Joe film franchise was launched in 2009 with G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, starring Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans, Rachel Nichols, Sienna Miller, Byung-hun Lee, Ray Park, Dennis Quaid and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Tatum returned (albeit briefly) alongside Lee and Park for the sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, released in early 2013. The follow-up also starred Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Stevenson and Jonathan Pryce. Collectively, the pair of films have grossed more than $675 million at the worldwide box office.
