Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight saga, Thirteen, Miss Bala) is set to direct Heathen, a female-led Viking fantasy feature adapted from the story by Vault Comics, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Created, written, and illustrated by Natasha Alterici, Heathen follows Aydis, a young Viking warrior who comes out as queer in an age and culture of merciless patriarchy. Her ostracism leads her on a quest to right those cultural wrongs with Odin, the leader of the Viking Gods.

The movie is written by Kerry Williamson (What Happened to Monday) and will be produced by Robert Kulzer and Margo Klewans for Constantin Film alongside Prime Universe Films’ Adrian Askarieh. F.J. DeSanto will also serve as a producer, with executive producers including Hardwicke and Constantin’s Martin Moszkowicz and Vault CEO Damian Wassel.

The first volume of the trade paperback of Heathen, which contains the first four issues, has gone to multiple printings. Young Adult Library Service Association selected the book for its 2018 Great Graphic Novels for Teens list. A new story arc began in June from the indie publisher.
