Paul McCartney Adapting It’s A Wonderful Life Into A Stage Musical

According to Variety, former the Beatles member and rock legend Paul McCartney is in the process of writing a stage musical adaptation of the 1946 classic Christmas drama film It’s a Wonderful Life. The musician said that he is already “in the final stages of completing songs” for the upcoming musical which is expected to launch in late 2020.

McCartney is developing the musical along with playwright Lee Hall (Billy Elliot, Rocketman) and producer Bill Kenwright (West End). Lee is also collaborating with McCartney on the musical’s music and lyrics.

“Writing a musical is not something that had ever really appealed to me,” McCartney said in a statement. “But Bill and I met up with Lee Hall and had a chat and I found myself thinking this could be interesting and fun. ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ is a universal story we can all relate to.”

Set on Christmas Eve, It’s a Wonderful Life tells the story of a small-town banker named George Bailey, who contemplating suicide because of the regrets he has in his life. However, an angel is sent from Heaven to help him realize the value of his life by showing him what life would have been if had never existed.
