Graphic novel prologues for big studio action movies have become the norm, but it’s not often that an independent film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival gets a pretty classy graphic novel prologue, but that’s the case with David Lowery’s Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, which opens in select cities today. EW.com has just premiered a graphic prologue for the movie called “New Tattoo” that Lowery had hoped to make as a follow-up short film.
In the film, Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara play two outlaws whose 1970s crime spree ends with him in jail and her pregnant with their child. Years later, he escapes, intent on reuniting with his family, but not altogether aware of what dangers await him at home.
According to the EW intro:
For most of the film, the two lovers are apart, but their scenes together proved so fun and rewarding that writer/director David Lowery wrote what he hoped would be a follow-up short film, a prequel of sorts that captures their Bonnie and Clyde days.

Ain’t Them Bodies Saints opens in New York and Los Angeles today, August 16.
