Possibly one of the biggest revelations in superhero movies in recent years came out in early 2012 when Josh Trank’s found footage superpowers movie Chronicle, made for a mere $12 million, scored $127 million at the worldwide box office, showing what could be done with superpowers on film without having a $200 million FX budget. The movie also made a star out of actor Dane DeHaan, who has gone on to make lots of interesting movies since then before scoring the highly sought after role of Harry Osborn in Sony Pictures’ The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Recently, there’s been more chatter about 20th Century Fox moving forward with a sequel to Chronicle, although original writer Max Landis will no longer be involved.
Oh and in case you didn’t see the movie .. SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!…. DeHaan’s character, the problem teen Andrew whose issues at home lead him to go on a power-mad killing spree once he’s given superpowers from a meteor, dies at the end of it. Even so, having made the movie, we were curious to know what DeHaan thought of the latest developments with a sequel and here’s what he had to tell us when we spoke to him recently.
“Well, it was really Josh Trank who was really the impetus,” he said about Landis’ departure. “The movie was really his idea. I mean, Max certainly put it down on paper and he did a great job doing that, but it’s a story that lived within the mind of Josh certainly and I certainly give him credit for that.
“But I have no idea what’s going on with the sequel. I haven’t gotten a single phone call regarding it. I am completely in the dark about what’s happening and I hope that if it is made that it honors the first one in terms of the passion that went into the first one and the passion that comes across on the screen. I think we really made something special and I think it was something special because there were a lot of really cool people involved that had a lot of passion that battled every day to make that movie work. I just hope that whatever they do with the second oneif there is a second onehonors the first one in that way.”
And what does DeHaan have to say about The Amazing Spider-Man 2, his upcoming venture into summer tentpole movies, appearing in a movie that probably cost 10 times what Chronicle cost or more? Not nearly as much, although he did like working on the movie.
“It a really great experience and a really great luxury to have four months to prepare for a movie and then six months to shoot it,” he said. “I’m an actor who likes to work, you know? And I was able to work on this one more than I’ve been able to work on anything so I had a really amazing time shooting it. I worked with really great actors and a really great director and the script was really awesome, and I left completely fulfilled in a way that I didn’t think I would be and I think the fans are really going to love it.”
As we tried to get a few more hints about what kind of arc we might see Harry go through in the upcoming movie vs. in the already-announced sequels, DeHaan wasn’t having any of it and he gently slapped off our many queries with a simple, “You’ll just have to watch the movie and find out.”
