The film, which had its release date shifted up a full month, will go against the highly-anticipated twenty-third installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider-Man: Far From Home, however the release slot has proven to be a strong date for the horror and indie genres in the past few years, with last year and 2016 being dominated by the third and fourth installments of the Purge franchise and 2017 seeing David Lowery’s A Ghost Story grossing nearly $2 million on a $100,000 budget.
The film follows a couple, played by Jack Reynor (Strange Angel) and Florence Pugh (Outlaw King), who are traveling through Sweden to visit their friend’s rural hometown for its fabled mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.
The film will also star Will Poulter (Detroit), William Jackson Harper (The Good Place), Ellora Torchia (Broadchurch), Archie Madekwe (Teen Spirit) and relative newcomer Vilhem Blomgren.

Aster’s Hereditary may have been shut out of the Oscars this year, but it managed to clean up at the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards. Star Toni Colette won Best Actress for her role, with Alex Wolff winning Best Supporting Actor. Aster himself won Best Director for the horror feature, who also took home the award for Best Screenplay. The film also won for Best Kill and Best Wide-Release Movie.
Midsommar will hit theaters on July 3.
