Back in 2016, it was reported that director Roland Emmerich would tackle the sci-fi action epic Moonfall as a follow up to Independence Day: Resurgence. However, the project never materialized and he moved on to direct the war film Midway, set to release this November. Now, The Wrap reports that Emmerich has returned to Moonfall with plans to direct in the first quarter of 2020.

Moonfall has been likened as a combination of 2012 and Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, following “an unlikely band of misfits who must unite to save humanity when the moon falls out of orbit and hurtles towards earth.”
Emmerich will co-write the project alongside Harald Kloser and Spenser Cohen. His production banner, Centropolis Entertainment will produce.
