Lionsgate has announced development on a brand new female-led comedy film titled Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, co-written by Academy Award-nominated writing duo Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo (Bridesmaids). Set to debut next year in 2020, the film will also be led by Wiig and Mumolo as the film’s titular lead characters.
Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar will follow the story of best friends Barb (Wiig) and Star (Mumolo), who will both leave their small Midwestern town for the first time to go on vacation in Vista Del Mar, Florida, where they soon find themselves tangled up in a villain’s evil plot to kill everyone in town.

“It is such an honor that Kristen and Annie have entrusted us with their follow-up to Bridesmaids. Their projects offer a rare combination of big laughs, big heart and female empowerment that everyone will love — men and women, young and old,” Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group president Nathan Kahane said in a statement.
The film will be directed by Josh Greenbaum (New Girl, Becoming Bond). Jessica Elbaum’s female-focused production company Gloria Sanchez Productions is set to produce the project together with Wiig and Mumolo. Meredith Wieck and Jim Miller will oversee the production for the studio.
“I’m so excited to be a part of this movie which showcases Kristen and Annie’s original, fresh, and undeniably hilarious voice in spades,” Greenbaum said. “I’m also always looking for projects with titles that rhyme, so it really all worked out on this one.”
This film will mark the second collaboration between Wiig and Mumolo, whom have both worked together on the award-winning comedy film Bridesmaids which starred Maya Rudolph, Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, and Rose Byrne.
