DisneyPixar’s Monsters University and Paramount’s World War Z took over the domestic ox office causing Warner Bros. Pictures’ Man of Steel to drop more than was expected its second weekend. Internationally, however, the Superman movie enjoyed another big weekend.
Monsters University topped the domestic box office with an estimated $82 million from 4,004 theaters and averaged $20,480 per location. It means that Pixar still has a perfect record with 14 of 14 features opening in first place in wide release. Monsters University is their second-highest opening trailing only Toy Story 3 ($110 million). The prequel also marks the second-highest June debut for an animated title and the second-highest June opening in Disney history (both behind Toy Story 3).
The film, voiced by Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Helen Mirren, Alfred Molina, Dave Foley, Sean P. Hayes, Joel Murray, Peter Sohn, Charlie Day, Nathan Fillion, Bobby Moynihan, Julia Sweeney, Aubrey Plaza, Tyler Labine, John Krasinski, Bonnie Hunt, Beth Behrs and John Ratzenberger, received an excellent A CinemaScore from audiences.
Internationally, Monsters University opened in 35 markets and earned an estimated $54.5 million for a worldwide total of $136.5 million so far.
Coming in at second place domestically was World War Z, which earned $66 million from 3,607 theaters for an average of $18,298. Starring Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, James Badge Dale, Matthew Fox and David Morse, the $190 million zombie action thriller marks Pitt’s biggest opening ever surpassing 2005’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith‘s $50.3 million. Receiving a B+ CinemaScore, World War Z added $45.8 million from 25 markets overseas for a worldwide total of $111.8 million.
Warner Bros. Pictures’ Man of Steel dropped to third place and lost about 64.7% in ticket sales from its first weekend, a larger percentage than was expected. The Superman movie brought in $41.2 million its second weekend and has earned $210 million after two weeks. Overseas, the Zack Snyder-directed film performed much better in first place with another $89 million for an international total of $188.3 million. Worldwide, the $225 million-budgeted Man of Steel has reached $398.3 million.
Columbia Pictures’ This is the End dropped two spots to fourth place but only 37.3% in ticket sales. The R-rated comedy added $13 million its second weekend for a total of $57.8 million so far. The film was made for about $32 million.
Rounding out the top five domestically, Summit’s Now You See Me earned $7.9 million its fourth weekend and has pushed its total to $94.5 million. In sixth place, Universal’s Fast & Furious 6 added $4.8 million its fifth weekend and has collected $228.4 million domestically.
A24 also expanded The Bling Ring into 650 theaters where the Sophia Coppola film earned $2 million, or an average of $3,077 per theater. Starring Emma Watson, Leslie Mann, Taissa Farmiga, Claire Julien, Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Georgia Rock and Gavin Rossdale, the film has earned 2.3 million after two weeks.
