Simon Kinberg Drops a Huge Dark Phoenix Spoiler!

Simon Kinberg apparently is not against spoilers, as the director decided to go ahead and let everybody know who dies in his upcoming Dark Phoenix film, according to The Wrap (via EW). Actually, the reveal was already in the public psyche thanks to that recent trailer, but Kinberg decided to explain why he let loose such a big reveal. SPOILERS AHEAD!

Well, the thought process behind that was to primarily show that this is a movie that is unlike other X-Men movies,” said Kinberg of the death of Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique. “It’s a movie where shocking things happen, where intense, dramatic things happen. People don’t just fall off buildings and dust themselves off and walk away. There’s a reality to this movie and a consequence to this movie. Even more than that, it was to show that Jean/Dark Phoenix is genuinely a threat to everyone, including the X-Men.”

Kinberg went on to talk about Mystique’s death in greater detail, noting that it was the most dramatic thing he could think of for the movie. Ultimately, though, Dark Phoenix is a film about Jean losing control due to her immense powers. To dramatize that properly,” Kinberg said, “you have to show real loss, you have to show real pain and show real threat and menace.”

In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

Along with star Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Dark Phoenix will bring back much of the cast of the new films, which also includes Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler) and Evan Peters (Quicksilver). Lamar Johnson of The Next Step has joined the cast in a mystery role and the mutant Dazzler will reportedly play a part in the film.

Simon Kinberg is writing and directing the film, marking his directorial debut, and will also produce alongside Lauren Shuler Donner and Hutch Parker. Dark Phoenix is set to open in theaters on June 7.
