The post Avengers: Engame MCU is poised to launch a number of new franchises, including The Eternals. Chloe Zhao will direct Marvel’s Eternals movie, which is based on Jack Kirby’s comic of the same name. During a recent interview with Collider, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige offered a brief Eternals update which hinted at the film’s immense scale.
“Jack Kirby did an immense, amazing epic with Eternals that spans tens of thousands of years, and that’s also something we haven’t really done,” said Feige. “Which is why that among many other things post-Endgame, we find appealing.”
“Everything after Endgame, and after Spider-Man: Far From Home, will be different and be unique, as we try to make every film,” continued Feige. “But seeing returning characters is certainly something we’re gonna do and want to do. But also introducing characters that the majority of the world has never heard of, much like Guardians, much like Avengers before we made Avengers. And there are lots of them. Eternals are one group, but we like the idea of introducing an ensemble, doing an ensemble movie from the start, as opposed to building up as we did with the first Avengers. More like Guardians, not tonally, but in terms of introducing a new group of people.”

Casual Marvel fans may not realize it, but Thanos is an Eternal. That may not factor into the movie, but it’s a possible connection that could be explored at some point. Within the Marvel Universe, the Eternals and their rivals, the Deviants, were offshoots of humanity. Both species were created by the Celestials; the space gods who have also appeared in the MCU. Several Eternals were seemingly immortal, and aged very slowly. Thanos and the residents of Titan were retroactively revealed to be Eternals after Kirby’s initial run with the characters.
Matthew and Ryan Firpo are writing the script for The Eternals. Marvel hasn’t announced a release date.
