Mike Makowsky (Bad Education) will adapt the story, about bright Ukranian teen Artur Samarin, who lied about his age so he could get adopted and stay in the United States after a short stint in a work exchange program. Apparently, the kid excelled in his school, was in contention for valedictorian and had his choice of colleges to attend, as well as dreams of working for NASA, before all of his hopes came crashing down. What went wrong? His foster parents turned him in when he refused to play the part of Cinderalla — i.e. a servant — in their home. Rather than push him towards his dreams, they brushed aside his talents and accused him of being a terrorist.
Jeremy Steckler of Condé Nast Entertainment is producing. Makowsky, Elgort, and Emily Gerson Saines will be executive producer. Robert Kessel and Jonathan King are overseeing for Participant.
Elgort is currently set to star in Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story.
Riley’s article appeared in GQ Magazine in May, and is a pretty terrific read for those seeking more information.
