Are You Afraid of the Dark? is based on the Canadian horror anthology series that ran on Nickelodeon from 1992-1996. Both series featured a group of teenagers who called themselves “The Midnight Society.” The group would gather around a campfire at the beginning of each episode and one of the teens would say, “Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society, I call this story [name of episode].” Then they’d toss “midnight dust” on the campfire. The audience would then see the story unfold. The stories were all scary, from abandoned houses to vampires to witches.
