Joel Silver and StudioCanal Plan Escape From New York

The film planned for a remake a number of times over the years, Deadline is reporting that Joel Silver and his Silver Pictures are teaming with StudioCanal for a new big screen take on Escape From New York.

Set in a dystopic future, John Carpenter’s 1981 original starred Kurt Russell as a Snake Plissken, an eyed-patched convict sent into a maximum security prison (formerly the island of Manhattan) to rescue the President.

Carpenter directed his own sequel to the original, Escape From L.A., in 1996.

New Line Cinema had been planning a remake for some time with, most recently, The Crazies director Breck Eisner attached to helm. Before that, Len Wiseman was planning a version that would have starred Gerard Butler in the Plissken role.

The new take will be produced by Silver and Andrew Rona with Alex Heineman executive producing.
