Snake Eyes Movie: Robert Schwentke Eyed to Helm G.I. Joe Spinoff

Neither of the two G.I. Joe films were huge hits for Paramount. But perhaps a standalone feature centered on one of the team’s founding members will fare better. Variety reports that Robert Schwentke has entered talks to direct a Snake Eyes film for the studio.

Snake Eyes is the ninja commando known for his deadly ability with a sword and trench knives. However, he is also a highly skilled martial artist who can be just as dangerous unarmed. Snake-Eyes was living in solitude in the High Sierras when he was recruited to join G.I. Joe. His real name and backstory have long been sources of mystery. As a result of being caught in a helicopter explosion, he is heavily scarred and mute. To hide his face, he usually appears in a black balaclava and matching bodysuit. Actor and stuntman Ray Park played Snake Eyes in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Since the new film is rumored to be a reboot, it’s unlikely that Park will be reprising the role.

Last year, Paramount set a March 27, 2020 release date for a new G.I. Joe movie, but it’s unknown if Snake Eyes is in the film. Schwentke previously directed RED and R.I.P.D., both of which were based on existing comic books. He also helmed two installments in the Divergent series. His most recent effort is the German film The Captain, which was set during World War II and released last year. If Schwentke formally joins the project, he’ll be directing from a script written by Beauty and the Beast scribe Evan Spiliotopoulos
