The comic, written by Rick Remender (Deadly Class, Uncanny X-Force), is set in the near-future where the U.S. government has devised a plan to eliminate crime and terrorism through a signal that will make it impossible for anyone to knowingly commit a crime. The film will follow a small-time career criminal as he learns of the heist of the century from a femme fatale and works with her and her deadly boyfriend to get away with it before the signal begins broadcasting.
Ramirez is set to star in the lead role of the criminal, Graham Burke. The actor was just nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for the titular role in the second season of FX’s true crime anthology and is currently working on the live-action adaptation of the Disneyland ride Jungle Cruise starring Dwayne Johnson (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) and Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns).

The film is set to be directed by Olivier Megaton, who’s well-known for directing two-thirds of the Taken franchise, as well as the finale of the original Transporter trilogy starring Jason Statham. The Last Days of American Crime adaptation is written by Karl Gajdusek, who previously wrote for Netflix’s Stranger Things and co-wrote the screenplay for the Tom Cruise sci-fi thriller Oblivion.
