June 14 marks another busy week with quite a few recent big screen titles coming home. There’s Dan Trachtenberg‘s smart thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane, Andrew Haigh’s romantic drama 45 Years, Dexter Fletcher‘s hugely enjoyable sports biopic Eddie the Eagle (which also arrives in a 4K version) and the action sequel London Has Fallen, to name a few.
Also arriving this week is Michael Showalter‘s sweetly comic drama Hello, My Name is Doris (starring two-time Academy Award winner Sally Field), the biblical drama The Young Messiah and Dylan Kidd’s comedy ensemble Get a Job, starring Miles Teller, Anna Kendrick, Bryan Cranston and more. Younger audiences are also likely to get a thrill out of this week’s direct-to-home video family adventure American Girl: Lea to the Rescue.
Shout! Factory, meanwhile, continues their impressive line of Scream Factory Blu-rays. This week, they’re adding both chapters of Victor Salva’s horror franchise. Look for both Jeepers Creepers and Jeepers Creepers 2, both of which come to Blu-ray for the first time in feature-packed editions. The company also releases this week director Eric Hannezo’s recent remake of Mario Bava’s Rabid Dogs.
Warner Archive continues to bring classics to HD with a Blu-ray edition of Blake Edwards’ Victor Victoria. Other DVD only titles arriving directly to the label via DVD include 1935’s Dinky and O’Shaughnessy’s Boy, 1936’s Tough Guy and 1938’s Stablemates and Lord Jeff.
The Criterion Collection has two brand new inductions June 14 with both Jean Renoir’s 1931 drama La Chienne and 1941’s Here Comes Mr. Jordan, the comedy upon which films like 1947’s Down to Earth and 1978’s Heaven Can Wait were based.
Other titles debuting on Blu-ray for the first time June 14 include all three Jaws sequels, Jaws 2, Jaws 3 (in 3D, no less!) and Jaws: The Revenge. If that doesn’t give you your fill of franchise thrillers, June 14 also sees the release of Airport: The Complete Collection, which includes Blu-ray versions of Airport, Airport 1975, Airport ’77 and The Concorde… Airport ’79.
The final frontier goes 4K June 14 with the re-release of both J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness. Both films include their respective Blu-ray versions along with the special features that were previously only available in the Star Trek Compendium set. There’s also a complete series set of the original Star Trek debuting this week, but fans might want to wait. It was recently announced that the series will be re-released again later this year in a 50th anniversary collection that will include not only all three seasons of the original show but all six original crew movies and, for the first time anywhere, a Blu-ray release of Star Trek: The Animated Series.
Small screen releases arriving June 14 include the first season of HBO‘s Ballers, the first season of Syfy‘s Dark Matter and the second season of Starz‘s Power. There’s also, on DVD only, the first season of WGN America‘s Underground and the seventh and final season of FX‘s The League. If you’d like to experience the popular fantasy football comedy in one fell swoop, however, you might prefer to check out The League: The Complete Series, which includes all seven seasons.
Rounding out the June 14 TV titles is The X-Files: The Event Series, which delivers all six episodes of the recent FOX revival series. If you bought last year’s complete series, there’s even room in the box reserved for this new set.
Titles debuting via Digital HD the week of June 14 include Jon Watts’ Clown, Gavin Hood’s Eye in the Sky and Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, starring Tina Fey as a television journalist reporting from Afghanistan.

- A New Vision — J.J. Abrams’ vision was not only to create a Star Trek that was a bigger, more action-packed spectacle, but also to make the spectacle feel real. Every aspect of production—from unique locations to the use of classic Hollywood camera tricks—was guided by this overall objective.

Abrams’ desire to shoot on real locations whenever possible led the production team to a number of strange and surprising locations.
- Props and Costumes — Property master Russell Bobbitt had the unique challenge of designing props that were both true to the original series and pertinent to today’s technology. Likewise, costume designer Michael Kaplan talks about how he designed costumes that paid homage to what came before yet were relevant and timeless.
- Ben Burtt and the Sounds of Star Trek — When famed sound designer Ben Burtt was hired to create sounds for the first Star Wars film, he took his inspiration from the original “Star Trek” series. Burtt jumped at the opportunity to pay tribute to the sounds that sparked his career with the sounds he created for the new Star Trek.
- Score — As a fan of the original series, composer Michael Giacchino embraced the challenge of creating new music for Star Trek while preserving the spirit of Alexander Courage’s celebrated theme.
