Terrifier’s Catherine Corcoran Reflects on Iconic Art the Clown Hacksaw Kill

Ahead of hosting Shout! TV’s debut episode of Double Take on March 21, which will feature a double feature themed to Women’s History Month, Terrifier and Return To Nuke ‘Em High’s Catherine Corcoran reflected on her contributions to horror and her iconic hacksaw kill that helped make Art the Clown a new slasher icon.

Beginning at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. Catherine will present K-19: The Widowmaker directed by Kathryn Bigelow, and Misbehaviour directed by Philippa Lowthorpe, in celebration of women in film.

“It’s always so crazy to me when people ask me what it means to solidify a slasher villain in Art the Clown because truthfully, when we were making Terrifier, we didn’t know what a behemoth it was gonna become. But Damien did say to me the night we were filming the hacksaw scene, he said to me, ‘Catherine, are you ready to make horror movie history?’ I looked at him, and I said, ‘You are full of s—. There is no way anyone’s going to watch this,’ and here we are,” Corcoran told ComingSoon about her work on the original film.

“It just keeps getting bigger and bigger. It just becomes this behemoth of a thing. I think there is this special bond between myself, Damien, Jenna Kanell, Sam Scaffidi, and David Howard Thornton, that is just so special and so unique and so pure. Because unlike anyone else, who as wonderful as they are, has come into the franchise, we were just doing it for the love of the game. Gosh, what a privilege it is to take something that was made for $30,000 and it become this massive franchise. So I think if this is the iconic villain of this era, I’m really just privileged to have been part of the reason that was created. That’s really powerful.”

While her character’s death has made any future Terrifier movie appearances unlikely, Corcoran recently starred in the music video for Ice Nine Kills’ “A Work of Art,” which celebrates the franchise and features Art the Clown.

“Spencer [Charnas] is one of my best friends, and I feel so privileged that he always wants to celebrate me and my work, even in whatever messed up ways he wants to do it. It was funny because while there’s images of us and stuff that gets reused in the films, I’ve never actually been back on the set of Terrifier since we filmed the first film. There was this kind of emotional moment when David and I were in the room together for the first time, surrounded by all these people, and working with Chris Nelson, who’s an Academy Award-winning effects artist. I think someone sent the video of us together to Damien, and he got emotional,” said Corcoran.

“If I was ever gonna come back to it, I think the only way to do it would be with people who support me creatively and who I love the most. So I was so privileged to be able to do that with Spencer and the whole band, Ricky, Mike, Joe, all these incredible people who really do love and support me, and even be able to be a part of it with my friend Leah Voysey, who’s one of my best friends. If there’s any way to revisit, it’s gotta be with your friends, whether it’s you watching it or whether you’re a part of it. So, yeah, it meant the world. If that was the only way I was gonna come back was for them. So, I really appreciate them giving me the opportunity.”
