Jurassic World Rebirth Trailer Review: ‘I’m Cautiously Optimistic’

The Jurassic World Rebirth trailer is finally here, so it’s time for our review of our first look at the upcoming sequel. The Jurassic Park franchise has definitely struggled with consistency over the years, and after the hugely disappointing Dominion, there’s a lot riding on Rebirth to course-correct and reinvigorate the series. The trailer certainly has a few head-turning moments, but did it successfully increase our optimism for the movie? Here are our thoughts and fan reactions.

Jurassic World Rebirth trailer review

Let’s immediately get this out of the way: what is this thing?

Since Jurassic Park 3, the JP series has had a habit of trying to create new central antagonist dinosaurs that haven’t remotely competed with the original’s Rexy. We’ve had the likes of the Indominus rex and the Indoraptor, but none have had the same impact as Isla Nublar’s Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Jurassic World Rebirth looks to be following the same path, throwing this Cloverfield-looking monster into the mixer. The difference here is that while the previous films’ new dinosaurs still resembled regular dinos, this bulbous big guy is a straight-up creature feature monster. I’m not massively sold on this idea; I’d rather the series return to its roots of presenting dinosaurs as animalistic rather than deliberately villainous.

Early plot leaks suggested that this new monster was inspired by Star Wars’ Rancor and Alien’s Xenomorphs, and that influence is absolutely visible. Still, the two shots of the monster in the trailer are definitely scary, and I’m all for more horror in my Jurassic movies.

Aside from the brand-new mutant monster, Rebirth thankfully looks a lot more like OG Jurassic Park than Jurassic World. Visually, those dull blue hues are nowhere to be seen, replaced with a more vibrant color palette befitting of what looks to be an Indiana Jones-esque adventure. The T-Rex’s look has been updated, and considering the shot is in broad daylight where no CGI workarounds can be hidden, the new design looks great.

In terms of how its plot is shaping up, our band of protagonists venturing to an island used as the research facility for the original Jurassic Park is interesting. This should potentially see a mix of dinosaurs thriving in a world largely untouched by humans, mixed with whatever horrific creations cooked up in that lab that didn’t make their way to Isla Nublar. Oh, and I can’t wait to see that river scene from Michael Crichton’s original book recreated on the big screen.

RATING

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Overall, Jurassic Park/World is a series that I’ll remain wary of considering its sheer number of misfires, but there’s enough in this trailer to make me cautiously optimistic.
