So which movies will go on to define the summer of 2019? Without a doubt the biggie will be Avengers: Endgame, the culmination of an 11-year, 22-film saga in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that wound up shattering all records at both the domestic and international box office to become the all-time movie champ over Avatar with nearly $2.8 billion.

After Avengers there were other big winners at the box office, but like that film most of them were via Walt Disney Pictures, including The Lion King, Toy Story 4 and Aladdin. There was also Spider-Man: Far From Home which, while not a Disney film, did utilize Marvel Studios characters resulting in the biggest box office for a Spidey film ever. Outside of superheroes, Keanu Reeves brought John Wick Chapter 3 to a franchise high, while Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood showed that auteur-driven original movies with big stars still have a place at the table.

The biggest losers were big budget tentpoles that couldn’t deliver the goods audiences wanted, the most notable being Fox’s Dark Phoenix which tarnished the X-Men legacy with a film that managed to please few. Men in Black International also failed to capitalize on a dependable brand, while Godzilla: King of the Monsters drastically underperformed compared to its predecessor. Annabelle Comes Home also grossed a series low for the Conjuring Universe, while still earning a healthy profit overseas.
