The X-Men franchise came to a close after nearly 20 years in 2019 with the release of Dark Phoenix. Now, with the release of The New Mutants in 2020, the X-Men are far from gone, but it’s still wild to think about the staying power of the mutant movies. The same goes for Batman, who has returned to the screen again and again since his first big-screen iteration back in 1966. When looking at just how long these comic book franchises have been around, it’s interesting to note that Spider-Man has had just as many movies as these other properties in significantly less time.
Since 2002, there have been seven Spider-Man movies, with another on the way in July of 2019. This ninth entry, Spider-Man: Far from Home, brings the web-slinger up to the same level as Batman and the X-Men as the most prevalent heroes in film (not counting direct-to-video entries, of course—if we did, there’d be no telling who’d take the top spot here). To celebrate the latest on-screen appearance of the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, let’s take a look at the best and the worst the hero has had to offer.

#1. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
Peter Parker isn’t the only one to put on the suit, so to speak. In fact, Miles Morales takes on the responsibility of Spider-Man in quite a few versions of Spider-Man’s story. Into the Spider-Verse capitalizes on this, showing Miles side-by-side(-by-side-by-side-by-side) all kinds of different Spider-Mans. Its easily the best version of this hero’s journey to date.

#2. Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Sam Raimi is a true master. He embraces practical effects often and doesn’t cut corners when it comes to his Spider-Man trilogy. No film proves this more than his sequel, Spider-Man 2. It remains an incredible superhero movie, even after more than 15 years.

#3. Spider-Man (2002)
Sam Raimi’s first entry in his Spider-Man trilogy is nearly as good as his second. Tobey Maguire is still the one and only Peter Parker for many fans of the web-slinger, which must mean that Raimi’s Spider-Man is plenty deserving of third place.

#4. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
After Sony lent Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, many fans were unsure of where the high school hero’s story would go (especially considering they’d already seen two different it iterations of his origin story recently). Once Spider-Man appeared in Captain America: Civil War, it was clear his first (third) solo adventure under new management would be a real winner. Spider-Man: Homecoming doesn’t disappoint, even if it does tend to fall into the same traps as other MCU entries.

#5. Spider-Man 3 (2007)
Raimi’s conclusion to his Spider-Man trilogy gets a lot of scorn (even from other Spider-Man movies [see: Into the Spider-Verse]), but it’s honestly not that bad. When looking at these eight movies from above, it’s clear to see that Spider-Man 3 is far from the lowest possible point.

#6. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
Like Spider-Man 3, Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man gets a lot of ridicule. Andrew Garfield brings a different take on the web-slinger to the table, and starting with Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy before planning on bringing in Shailene Woodley’s Mary Jane Watson in a never-made third entry makes for a refreshing new perspective.

#7. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
This is the weakest Spider-Man movie we’ve seen to date. Still, it’s honestly not as bad as some other superhero movies released in the 21st century. Still, since Tom Holland’s take on the hero is certainly more admired than Garfield’s, it’s hardly worth trying to defend anymore.
