My Roommate Is a Gumiho Ending Explained: Does Jang Ki-Yong & Hyeri K-Drama Have a Happy or Sad Ending?

My Roommate Is a Gumiho is a 2021 K-drama starring Jang Ki-Yong and Hyeri in lead roles. The South Korean drama tells the story of a shape-shifting fox getting entangled with a human after she swallows his magic bead.

In the previous episode, Shin Woo-Yeo (Jang Ki-Yong) noticed his magical powers were not working. His fox (gumiho) friend, Yang Hye-Sun (Kang Han-Na), suggested that he might be turning into a human. Thrilled, Woo-Yeo started planning his future with Lee Dam (Hyeri). The episode’s ending showed Woo-Yeo planning to tell Dam about his permanent human transformation. But he noticed that his hands were on the verge of disappearing.

Episode 16 (finale) of My Roommate Is a Gumiho begins with Woo-Yeo realizing that he is not turning into a human. After discussing this with Hye-Sun, Woo-Yeo confirms that his existence is set to disappear. She suggests Woo-Yeo consult the “old man.” The latter is the superior power that decides their fate. Woo-Yeo confesses that he has tried contacting him, but the old man has not responded.

Will he disappear and leave Dam alone? Let’s find out.

My Roommate Is a Gumiho episode 16 recap & spoilers: Jang Ki-Yong disappears from Hyeri’s life

In My Roommate Is a Gumiho episode 16, Hye-Sun comforts Woo-Yeo and says, “I’m sure it’s not a big deal. That old man can be pretty nasty, but he is not the type to cut his own deadline short.”

She further advises him not to overthink the situation and concentrate on turning his bead blue. For context, if the fox’s red bead turns blue, he becomes a human. Despite a stressful situation, Woo-Yeo maintains his composure in front of Dam. When she mentions returning home to her brother, Woo-Yeo lovingly stops her from leaving him for even a day. Later, she introduces Woo-Yeo to her brother, who finds it hard to believe his sister can have a boyfriend.

The next day, Woo-Yeo and Dam spent quality time together like a regular couple. A sudden change in his magical powers makes him wonder if Dam should live with him. He drops her off at her house, thinking she will not be alone if he suddenly disappears. Meanwhile, Hye-Sun’s secret of being a fox is almost revealed to her boyfriend, Jae-Jin (Kim Do-Wan).

That night, Woo-Yeo pays Hye-Sun a visit and bids farewell to his oldest friend. He asks her to take care of Dam when he is gone. Meanwhile, Dam wonders why Woo-Yeo has been acting strange lately. While talking to her brother, she notices Woo-Yeo’s picture vanishing from the photo frame. She finally learns about Woo-Yeo’s condition.

Woo-Yeo, on the other hand, writes an emotional letter to Dam. He ends the letter by saying, “Perhaps I knew from the start that you would change my destiny.” He then gets a call from Dam, who questions his previous statements. In a hurry, she tries to cross the road while talking to him on the phone, and a truck appears in front of her. Woo-Yeo uses his magical powers and saves her, but the truck hits him. As she runs towards him, Woo-Yeo disappears.

My Roommate Is a Gumiho ending: Did Jang Ki-Yong & Hyeri end up together?

After the accident, Hye-Sun finds Dam crying at Woo-Yeo’s house while reading his letter. My Roommate Is a Gumiho episode 16 further shows that Dam is heartbroken as Woo-Yeo’s photos begin to disappear. She decides that she will wait for him and spend her days at his house.

Hye-Sun feels bad for Dam and reveals that Woo-Yeo knew Dam would be heartbroken. Hence, he asked Hye-Sun a favor to erase Dam’s memory. But the latter refuses to forget him. When Dam wakes up the next morning, she sees Woo-Yeo smiling at her. Initially, she thinks it’s a hallucination, but soon realizes he has returned.

Dam’s love and longing turn Woo-Yeo into a human. Since his return, Woo-Yeo has experienced his life as a human, and the two spent days exploring Dam’s bucket list. On the other hand, Hye-Sun reveals to Jae-Jin that she used to be a gumiho/fox, and in response, he says that he is enlisted. Hye-Sun decides to wait for him, ending their story on a happy note. Additionally, Dam’s brother also finds someone special.

My Roommate Is a Gumiho ends with Woo-Yeo and Dam holding hands and looking up at the stars. He teases, “You were supposed to carry the bead, not fall in love with its owner.” Dam responds, “What about you? You were supposed to steal my energy, not my heart!” Woo-Yeo says, “Then since we risked our lives and fell in love, let’s stay together for a long time.” They lovingly look at each other, and a red thread connects them, making them each other’s destiny.

Overall, the K-drama has a happy and satisfying ending for all the characters. My Roommate Is a Gumiho is available on various streaming platforms, including Viki, iQIYI, Amazon Prime Video, and Netflix.
