The upcoming Netflix movie My Name is Loh Kiwan documents Loh Kiwan’s challenging journey in wanting to be accepted and identified. The newly released teaser begins with the character introducing him to the customs. From then on, it begins to showcase his escape from North Korea and subsequent entry into Belgium to earn a refugee status and start his life over.
In the flashback scene, Loh Kiwan runs with his mother, attempting to flee North Korea as several soldiers chase them. The trailer also shows him introducing himself. Loh Kiwan was born in Korea (Camp 7, Hassan Collective Farm in Usi-Gun, Chagang Province, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea). As they continue to escape, his mother meets with an accident.
Loh Kiwan arrives in Belgium alone and with almost nothing. He lives in poor conditions and practically relies on snacks and drinks. His struggle, however, doesn’t end there. The Belgian authorities cannot confirm that he is from North Korea. The court further denies his refugee status, which makes his life even more difficult.
However, Loh Kiwan’s determination precedes all of his struggles. Although he faces challenges, he promises to survive and says, “I have managed to come this far by promising myself that I would endure and overcome whatever hell I experienced in this land. I promise to survive in this land.”
