The Bequeathed Ending Explained: Does Netflix K-Drama Have a Happy or Sad Ending?

Netflix’s limited series The Bequeathed premiered on Friday with all six episodes. Starring Kim Hyun-Joo as Yoon Seo-Ha, the suspense thriller K-drama revolves around the death of a family member, leading to ominous incidents.

It tells the story of Seo-Ha, an assistant professor unhappy with her job and cheating husband. One day, she gets a call that her uncle has passed away, and she needs to handle his burial. The news comes as a shock to her as she didn’t know she had an uncle.

She learns she inherited a vast burial ground when she reaches her hometown with her husband. She meets her half-brother Kim Yeong-Ho (Ryu Kyung-Soo) at the funeral, who behaves strangely, leaving Seo-Ha scared. Several dark and twisted events follow, and she ultimately gets a bittersweet ending.

The Bequeathed spoilers: Did Ryu Kyung-Soo kill Kim Hyun-Joo’s husband?

After Seo-Ha’s uncle’s funeral, The Bequeathed shows detectives Choi Seong-Jun and Park Sang-Min questioning Kim Hyun-Joo’s Seo-Ha. She makes it clear to them that she never knew of her uncle and that her parents died long ago. She seems slightly startled by the funeral incident involving Kim Yeong-Ho.

Seo-Ha also has to deal with a greedy businessperson who wants her to sell the burial land. Adding to her troubles was a setback at work and arguments with her cheating husband over the inherited land. She kicks him out of her car in the middle of the road after a fight. The next scene shows someone shooting her husband with a hunter’s rifle.

At this point, Seo-Ha’s family case is more complicated than ever. The detectives suspect her and Yeong-Ho, but they fail to find any evidence against them. Seong-Jun, however, discovers that Seo-Ha once hired an investigator to tail her husband. The complication doesn’t end here as the next death is of the investigator. He is killed when he searches Yeong-Ho’s house on Seo-Ha’s demand. She suspects her half-brother to be the culprit.

Ryu Kyung-Soo‘s character appears extremely suspicious, especially after he is shown performing rituals with a bird’s blood and ancient drawings. After a series of murders, Seo-Ha’s instinct says Yeong-Ho is the killer but he keeps denying it and even tries to save her. The detectives, too, couldn’t find any proof against him. Detective Seong-Jun, on the other hand, visits a shaman to learn more about Yeong-Ho and his childhood. Once he returns, he realizes his and Seo-Ha’s lives are in danger.

The Bequeathed ending: A shocking family secret reveals the culprit

Towards The Bequeathed ending, detective Seong-Jun discovers that Seo-Ha and Yeong-Ho are related but through a strange bloodline. He learns that Ryu Kyung-Soo’s character is not the killer but someone else who wants the burial land.

When detective-duo Seong-Jun and Sang-Min visit the half-siblings’ father’s village, they discover he was romantically involved with his sister. Due to the unnatural relationship, the family and the village had shunned them. It was during this time when Seo-Ha’s father left her for someone else. In reality, he raised his son with his sister. After the father dies, Yeong-Ho’s mother becomes possessive of her son and wants the burial land for him.

Seo-Ho learns the truth when Yeong-Ho’s mother kidnaps her for the final sacrifice. To save herself, she tells her aunt that Yeong-Ho’s life is in danger after her deal with a property manager goes wrong.

Netflix’s K-drama The Bequeathed ending features the property manager trying to burn the half-siblings alive. Somehow, Yeong-Ho’s mother and Seo-Ha manage to save themselves along with Yeong-Ho. The detectives and the cops arrive at the same location to arrest the mother. But she bids a painful farewell to her son and runs into a burning building. The K-drama ends with Seo-Ha becoming an art teacher, living her life somewhere far away from the city. She doesn’t sell the burial land, instead, places the tombstones of her family.

The Bequeathed ending seems bittersweet. While Seo-Ha and Yeong-Ha gain freedom, they seem lonely. Meanwhile, all six episodes are streaming on Netflix.
