Like Flowers in Sand Episode 9 features Jang Dong-Yoon’s Baek-Du realizing the heartbreaking emotions Du-Sik went through in the past. For context, Du-Sik and her family left town after the townspeople labeled her father as a “murderer” despite his denial.
She went to Seoul, changed her name to Yu-Gyeong, and became a cop. After several years, she returned to the town to investigate Chil-Seong’s death. She disguised herself as a married woman who works as a manager at the Ssireum wrestling team. In episode 9, Baek-Du learns that she returned to find the real culprit behind the case her father got involved years ago.
Du-Sik/Yu-Gyeong, on the other hand, thinks her days of being the town’s gossip are over. But things get complicated when she gets dragged into an affair scandal. People around town discuss Baek-Du having an affair with a married woman. Other than him and Mi-Ran, no one knows that she is Du-Sik.
The townspeople start cursing Baek-Du behind his back. When his mother finds out, she questions him in front of everyone in the market. He loses his cool and pleads with the crowd to stop spreading rumors about others. He brings up Du-Sik’s story when no one stopped her family from leaving the town and instead believed the false accusations.
Apart from the affair scandal, Like Flowers in Sand Episode 9 also focuses on Chil-Seong’s death. Cafe owner Mi-Ran reveals that the match-fixer told her to leave the town and that he “technically” killed her father. She further hands over a bag of cash and ledgers to Du-Sik that Mi-Ran found in Chil-Seong’s hotel room.

Towards the Like Flowers in Sand Episode 9 ending, Jang Dong-Yoon’s Baek-Du rushes to the training center to find Du-Sik. When he meets her, he confesses his love for her.
Earlier in the episode, she informs him that she will leave the town in 10 days. Lee Joo-Myoung’s character also advises him to shrug off the rumor, claiming that it isn’t true. It upsets Baek-Du as he recalls their kiss.
After his outburst at the market, he runs to the training center to find Du-Sik. When they meet, he tells her that the rumor is half right and half wrong. He states that it might be fake for her, but it is the truth for him. She gets annoyed and calls out his weird behavior. He interrupts her and says, “I like you.”
He adds that he lost her when she left and confesses that he won’t let her leave this time. Du-Sik is left shocked and speechless.
